Next-generation 2D Barcode Starter programme launched to accelerate new barcode adoption

As retail and supply chain environments continue to evolve, GS1 New Zealand is committed to helping members stay ahead of the curve. With the global shift toward next-generation 2D barcodes gaining momentum, GS1 NZ is offering practical, hands-on support through a new 2D Starter Programme and also free 2D barcode consultations. These initiatives are designed to help businesses of all sizes navigate the transition to next generation barcodes.

What are next-generation 2D barcodes?

Next-generation 2D barcodes, such as GS1 QR Codes with Digital Link, are compact, information-rich codes that can carry far more data than their traditional linear barcode predecessors. These next-gen barcodes can include expiry dates, batch numbers, web links, and more - all while remaining scannable at point-of-sale. All this data can be presented to a consumer or a trading partner just via a mere scan by a smartphone or point-of-sale system.

GS1 New Zealand is aligning with the global Sunrise 2027 initiative, which aims for all retail point-of-sale systems to be capable of scanning 2D barcodes by the end of 2027. But the great news is that GS1 QR Codes work NOW – they are scannable with smartphones and can offer a range of benefits that standard QR codes don’t. We are encouraging suppliers and manufacturers of product to begin piloting 2D barcodes now so they can reap the benefits of GS1 QR codes now, and be prepared for when they are also scannable at point-of-sale in retail stores.

The Starter Workshop

To support businesses in this transition, we’ve introduced the 2D Starter Workshop, a half-day, interactive session tailored to each organisation’s needs. Facilitated by our 2D Barcode Lead Klaeri Schelhowe, the workshop helps businesses:

  • Understand global and local use cases for 2D barcodes
  • Identify key benefits and opportunities
  • Lay the groundwork for a pilot project
  • Build a business case for internal stakeholders.

Participants receive a customised summary report, a high-level roadmap, and a project canvas to guide their implementation journey – while benefiting from Klaeri’s deep expertise and knowledge.

Free 30 minute consultation

Not quite ready to pilot? We’re also offering a free 30-minute consultation with our team to get you started. This session provides:

  • An overview of the global shift to 2D barcodes
  • Insights into the benefits for your business
  • A chance to ask questions and explore next steps.

This no-cost consultation is ideal for businesses wanting to explore the potential of 2D barcodes and understand how they can start.

A strategic move for Kiwi businesses

Major retailers like Woolworths are already seeing benefits from 2D barcode adoption on meat and fish products with more to come, including improved product freshness, reduced waste, and enhanced food safety.

“We’re excited about the benefits 2D can offer and we want to support our members on their journey towards 2D. Our Starter Programme and free consultations are designed to help businesses take that first step with confidence,” says Dr. Peter Stevens, CEO of GS1 New Zealand.
