Transport and logistics
An essential link in the chain
|
|
Transport and Logistics play a crucial role in most supply chains. No
transport and logistics company can be efficient without robust
information technology and data systems.
|
Transport and Logistics operators can gain competitive advantage by using these and other GS1-based tools in their areas of the supply chain. Benefits include improved efficiency, increased visibility of the flow of shipments, more efficient handling and inventory management, increased security of distribution and speed of operations.
GS1 Logistics Forum
GS1 has launched this Forum to help manufacturers and material suppliers, retailers, logistic service providers and carriers achieve greater benefits of interoperability and improve visibility of the flow of goods through the supply chain.

SSCC-UCR pilot
This high level 'proof of concept' demonstrates the use of the GS1 Serial Shipment Container Code (SSCC) as the WCO Unique Consignment Reference (UCR) number in the wine and spirit supply chain between the United Kingdom and Australia.
The GS1 Article The UCR under the spotlight from the June edition of WCO magazine (see page 22-23) discusses the GS1 SSCC.
GS1 and BIC
In April 2010 Michel Hennemand, Chairman of B.I.C., and Miguel Lopera, President and
CEO of GS1, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation and technical
collaboration between both organizations.
B.I.C. and GS1 will cooperate, support and encourage the harmonization
of supply chain standards for Freight, Transport and Logistics. B.I.C. is a non-profit Organization that administers a world-wide system
for allocating and managing identification codes (BIC-CODES) for
international container transport. B.I.C. is the official registration
office, nominated by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO) and the World Customs Organization (WCO), in charge of registering
and protecting the uniqueness of container owner and operator
identification codes worldwide.
