Standards Development

Effective communication

When people speak to each other in different languages, misunderstandings can be frequent. The same applies to organisations doing business when they interact and trade – there can be much scope for  miscommunication and error. GS1 standards are called ‘the global language of business’ because they promote accuracy and consistency in information between organisations.

As with every language, GS1 standards grow, develop and change. Our members play an important role in developing the standards to remain relevant and effective. The Global Standards Management Process, or GSMP, is the engine that powers the entire GS1 System. GSMP is an open and transparent process based on the participation of GS1 members worldwide, all with a shared goals to improve supply chains and to enhance traceability.

The GSMP

This brings together diverse members of GS1 worldwide to make progress in a wide range of areas. They help identify the need for new standards, build understanding of business requirements, document best practices, obtain consensus on solutions, and develop and implementing the standards.

Organisations can engage in the GSMP as members (with voting rights) or as participants (without voting rights). Anyone can submit a "change request" to modify an existing standard or to create a new one, and then opt to take an active role in the development of a solution, or act as an observer as the GSMP does the work.

Benefits of the GSMP include:

  • Reduced costs. Implement leading-edge solutions that drive out costs and inefficiencies and add profits to your bottom line.
  • Go global. Improve global trading capabilities to enable you to reach new markets.
  • Solve problems. A global forum to connect your organisation to trading partners, solution providers, and industry colleagues to address industry issues.
  • Speed up business processes. Enhance your supply chain performance and customer satisfaction with increased speed to market.
  • Sharpen your strategic planning. Stay on top of the latest global business issues, trends, and emerging technologies.
  • Leverage new supply chain innovations. Participate in pilot implementations of leading-edge solutions.
  • Be heard. Have a proactive, direct voice in the global problem-solving process.
