Initiatives for greater responsiveness to customers

As the Hardware sector in New Zealand moves to adopt the key principles of efficient consumer response (ECR), there is increased demand for improved data at all points of the supply chain. Achieving efficiency requires fast, accurate and timely collection and exchange of information on production, distribution and retail sale. GS1 New Zealand is working with Hardware retailers and suppliers to drive best practice principles across the sector. Emphasis on compliance with GS1 standards in bar coding and data sharing will bring improve business efficiency and effectiveness for all supply chain participants.

Sector Initiatives
Hardware GS1 Action Group (HGAG)
Pooling the knowledge and experiences of the Australian and New Zealand Hardware, and following the lead of other global hardware initiatives, the HGAG has been set up to help develop, promote and deliver user guidelines, training courses and implementation programmes for the use of GS1 standards.
HGAG is overseen by a representative leadership group (Steering Committee) made up of key retailers and suppliers across Australia and New Zealand. The list of confirmed participants includes Mitre 10 Australia, Bunnings, BOC, Reece, Natbuild, John Danks, Placemakers, ITM, Mitre 10 NZ, 3M, Nylex, Orica, GWA, ITW-Proline, Saint-Gobain Abrasives and Carter Holt Harvey.
The Steering Committee has appointed Andrew Price, from Mitre 10
Australia, as chair and Patrice Chan-Yam, from Orica, as deputy chair.
The group meets six times a year.

The following work groups have been set up:
- Numbering and bar coding - to oversee issues related to retail, non-retail and logistical unit identification and tracking. The group is chaired by Error Kennedy, from John Danks.
- Data Synchronisation - to lead the trialling and implementation of data synchronisation via GS1net. The group is chaired by Graham Loosely, from Saint-Gobain Abrasives.
- eMessaging - to continue the maintenance of GS1 EANCOM® guidelines, and oversee industry adoption of GS1 XML messaging. This group is chaired by Matt Smith of Bunnings.
Future workgroups are expected to oversee industry adoption of RFID, Global Location Numbering and development of industry specific case studies.
