About GS1 Healthcare User Group - Australasia
GS1 Healthcare Australasia is the voluntary New Zealand/ Australia user group of GS1's Global Healthcare User Group. Although GS1 has existed for over 30 years and GS1 Member Organisations worldwide have supported the healthcare sector for many years, it was in 2005 that industry leaders agreed to kick off a truly global initiative. The user group was tasked to further develop global standards to meet emerging healthcare requirements, such as eHealth, traceability, eCommerce, and unique device identification to drive global harmonisation.
The New Zealand and Australian healthcare communities have many similarities and therefore GS1 Healthcare Australasia seek to harmonise these two communities closer together through the use of GS1 standards to drive trans-tasman operational efficiencies and improved patient safety outcomes.
Although standards development work continues, today there is a solid foundation of global standards available to the healthcare sector to implement standards-based solutions that will make the healthcare supply chain more secure and efficient.
About the event
We were delighted to hold a one-day conference in Wellington, New Zealand. The conference offered a diverse programme, involving both local and international presenters where the focus was on the use and benefits of implementing GS1 standards.
Presentations and case studies focused on using GS1 standards in global and international supply chain operations to drive out costs and improve efficiency and performance. The global drive towards instrument and device identification (and marking) to enhance traceability was discussed as was the increasing use of electronic catalogues to streamline procurement processes. An update of New Zealand's Safe Medication Management's end-to-end medication management was also presented.
The conference provided the opportunity to leverage a unique neutral an international forum and to network and bench mark with other stakeholders from around the world.
