eCom (electronic messaging)

Simple global business communication

Most organisations  have detailed documentation  – purchase orders, despatch orders, shipping manifests, delivery slips, receipts, invoices, payment statements and more. GS1 eCom makes it easier and less costly to send and receive all such communications electronically. The savings are potentially huge as processes become more efficient and information more accurate And timely.

eCom helps organisations across the world “speak” a common language of commerce to each other, no matter what their hardware or software, or what human language they speak!

eCom standards span two key areas:

  • GS1 XML
  • GS1 EANCOM

GS1 XML

XML is short for "eXtensible Markup Language".  XML is designed for information exchange over the internet.  XML enables you to create and validate electronic business messages that perform all the functions of traditional paper documents.

See more on the GS1 XML standards and find out more technical information.

GS1 EANCOM

EANCOM is fully based on the UN/EDIFACT (United Nations Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport), which is a set of internationally-agreed standards, directories and guidelines for the electronic interchange of data.

EANCOM is a detailed implementation guideline for UN/EDIFACT standard messages. EANCOM provides clear definitions, explanations and examples for trading partners to exchange commercial documents in a simple, accurate and cost effective manner.

EANCOM also incorporates into electronic messages the GS1 standard identifiers, including Global Trade Item Numbers and  Global Location Numbers. It enables electronic information flows to be integrated with the physical flow of products and other items.

See the GS1 EANCOM message types and find out more technical information.
