GS1 - The global language of business

What is GS1?

Any company, organisation or individual who wants the benefits of the world's only open, global standards for product identification and bar-coding must join the not for profit GS1 organisation.

With the growth of electronic commerce, the GS1 system is growing rapidly beyond its original retail base. Virtually everyone in the supply chain including transport operators and packaging manufacturers should consider GS1 membership to improve efficiency and to maintain their competitive edge.

Where a large organisation has multiple business divisions, each independent business unit should join GS1 and have its own unique GS1 membership number. This ensures that each unit is separately identified when it produces or markets products, issues invoices or receives payments.

To become a member of GS1 New Zealand, please complete the registration form (see How to Join GS1 New Zealand)

If you are exporting retail items to North America you may also need Uniform Product Code (UPC) numbers. If your customers in North America advise you that they need UPC numbers, we will obtain a UCC membership number for you at a cost of $300, with no GST payable.  Please contact GS1 New Zealand on (04) 494 1050 for further information.

If you publish books or magazines, there is an agreement between the International ISBN Agency and GS1 to allow use of the ISBN numbering system using a 978 or 979 prefix.  This applies only to the identification of individual books and magazines.  If you require further information on this system please contact us on (04) 494 1050 or info@gs1nz.org
